Healthcare Data
The Center for Health Workforce Studies recently released The Health Care Workforce in New York State: Trends in the Supply of and Demand for Health Care Workers 2023 which describes the current health workforce in an effort to assist stakeholders to make informed decisions related to health professions education and training, highlight the most pressing issues related to health workforce needs and guide policy.
In 2022, the Rockefeller Institute of Government released Defining the Care Workforce: A New Way to Think about Employment in Healthcare, Education and Social Services discussing the care economy and the care workforce with detail on related occupations and demographics of those occupations. The report states “A stable, well-trained care workforce is not only crucial to the well-being of communities, but the functioning of the rest of the economy.”
A worker shortage in the healthcare industry, prompted in part by talent pipeline disruptions, retirements and competition from rapidly growing and higher-paying industries, is leading to a reliance on costly contract agencies, longer waits for critical care and reduced operations. Recognizing the threat this workforce shortage poses to not only the health of the region’s residents but also to its economy, the Healthcare Industry Workgroup of the Capital Region Economic Development Council (CREDC) tasked Empire State Development (ESD), with support from the Center for Economic Growth (CEG), to conduct a study and develop a healthcare workforce development strategy. The Capital Region Economic Development Council: Healthcare Industry Workgroup 2023 Workforce Development Strategy outlines priority healthcare occupations detailing the issues and provides career pathway, regulatory and other recommendations.
