Pregnancy & Reproductive Health in a Harm Reduction Setting

This training facilitated by the ACR Health Center of Expertise will allow attendees to:

• explore attitudes and address stigma regarding substance use during pregnancy; • Identify best practices for improving perinatal care quality, safety, and outcomes; • Discuss the impacts of substances on pregnancy, and the health of the birthing parent and infant during pregnancy and after birth; • Apply a harm reduction approach to support positive reproductive health outcomes for all people who use drugs; • Provide guidance on best practices and strategies to use in the healthcare and legal systems; • List emergency complications that can occur throughout pregnancy; • Recall substance use treatment options during pregnancy, including different medication and alternative options; • Identify pain management options, both conventional and alternative, to address the specific needs and preferences of pregnancy people who use drugs during the labor and child birthing process; and • Examine postpartum care options aimed at enhancing positive health outcomes.

Session 1: April 11 - Anxiety and Depression: Care Techniques & Considerations

This session provides insight into anxiety and depression for professionals. Participants will gain knowledge about the causes, signs, symptoms, and prevalence of these conditions. The discussion will also address barriers to seeking care that may exist but do not necessarily indicate a lack of willingness on the part of the individual to seek help.


Session 2: June 25 - SMART Documentation for Care Providers

This session will provide detailed information about SMART goals and their empowering role in guiding individuals through their treatment or care journey. During this session, participants will learn how to craft their own SMART goals tailored to the populations they serve, as well as strategies for fostering ongoing client adherence with recommended treatment plans.


Session 3: September 12 - Tactics for Meaningful Work with Challenging Populations

This session will explore factors that may contribute to client resistance to treatment and the frustration that care professionals may experience when individuals express a desire to change but fail to engage. Discussion will also address working with individuals who may express or have expressed suicidal thoughts. Participants will learn to identify suicide risk factors and strategies to manage and mitigate critical situations and assist in facilitating necessary referrals for immediate attention.

This series is geared for care/case managers and care coordinators. Participation in all sessions is ideal, but not required - you may choose the session(s) you wish to attend while registering.

All the Lonely People Movie Premier and Panel Discussion

When real people share their stories onscreen, we find ourselves more motivated to get involved in an issue.

Join us for movie premiers for the film All the Lonely People, followed by a panel discussion on the impact of isolation on social-emotional well-being. Premiers will take place in several locations throughout our region.

Panels will include the film producer and co-founder of the Clowder Group, as well as local professionals and community members to help identify strategies to learn how to reconnect and make impactful change.

We will reconvene via zoom with all attendees in early 2024 to discuss progress, brainstorm solutions to obstacles and plan next steps.

Framing Organizational Transformation: Practical Approaches to Undoing Harmful Transactional Leadership - Part 2

Having spent part one exploring how to be more mindful of the impact of high-performance leadership, the second part of this session will focus on how centering healing can be transformative for both those served and those who are providing services.

The session will focus on Dr. Shawn Ginwright and the Flourish Agenda work on Healing Centered Engagement. We will walk through the five parts of the framework and the four pivots that can be used activate the framework to offer a different view of how to engage in challenging work and get to impact.

Presenter: Gregory Owens, LMSW

Gregory Owens is a Licensed Master Social Worker who retired from NY State government employment after 34 years. He worked for the Office of Children and Family Services in various management positions. As the Director of Strategic Partnerships, he led state-wide initiatives in the areas of fatherhood development, mentoring, and disproportionate representation of children of color in the juvenile justice and child welfare systems. For two and ½ years, he served as the Deputy Commissioner at the Division of Criminal Justice Services where he led the Office of Youth Development. He is a highly sought-after keynote speaker, trainer and consultant in leadership development, mentoring, cultural competence, and effective approaches for working with young Black males. He has consulted on nationally on racial disproportionality in the juvenile justice and child welfare systems.

Working with Individuals Actively Using Alcohol and/or Drugs: Knowledge, Strategies and Dialogues

During this virtual training, attendees will gain knowledge of the different types of drugs and how to recognize the signs that patients/clients may be actively using drugs and/or alcohol.

In addition, strategies to work with patients/clients who are actively using drugs and/or alcohol and express a desire to stop, as well as those who do not express a desire to stop or who may be relapsing on substances will be shared. Discussion will include the Five Stages of Change, motivational interviewing skills, changes in the addiction field from an abstinent model to a harm reduction model, what harm reduction models look like and sample dialogues to utilize in challenging situations.

This webinar is geared for care/case managers, care coordinators and peers.
